Glass barriers to beat touts |
|
Written by Masami Mustaza/The Sun

KLIA’s elaborate plan to eliminate menace Imagine this: Glass walls. And they can only watch helplessly as their "prey" walks past them.
Come mid-June, this will be the reality that touts at the KL International Airport (KLIA) will be facing when glass walls are put up to prevent them from getting to passengers when they exit the airport's arrival hall.
Malaysia Airports Bhd's (MAB) senior general manager Datuk Azmi Murad told Malay Mail yesterday of elaborate plans to fight the tout menace.
He said that glass walls, measuring eight feet in height, would replace the temporary barriers currently leading from the arrival hall exits.
Similar to the current arrangement, this glass "funnel" stops short of the terminal's wall, providing three exits for passengers:
Out of the terminal, and to either side of the terminal building. The glass walkway's exits will also be closely guarded to ensure that nobody from the outside gets to the passengers in the walkway, making it impossible for touts to approach passengers.

International passport and visa required for haj |
|
Written by Yeng Ai Chun & G.Reetha

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysians going for the haj this year would be required to use an international passport, said minister in the Prime Minister’s department Mej-Jen (R) Datuk Jamil Khir Baharom.
He said the passport issued by the Lembaga Tabung Haji would no longer be valid as the Saudi Government had come up with new regulations.
“Pilgrims would also need to apply for a visa. The new regulations would ensure smoother procedures and it would also make it faster for Malaysians to clear immigration as the passports need not be stamped,” he said after launching the third International Conference on Muslim Tourism, Hajj and Umrah 2009 on Thursday.
The conference, themed “Moving Towards Borderless Muslim Tourism,” at the Putra World Tade Centre drew more than 140 local and international delegates.
Jamil Khir said they were also awaiting details from the Saudi Government to determine whether the cost of performing the haj would increase this year.
“Saudi Arabia is upgrading its facilities in Mecca. They are building new buildings and the mosque courtyard is being enlarged.
“There are also new regulations by the Saudi Government on accommodation for pilgrims. Let’s wait for developments,” he said.

Firefly to launch Kuala Lumpur (Subang)-Phuket daily service |
|
FIREFLY, a fully owned subsidiary of Malaysia Airlines, will launch a daily flight between Kuala Lumpur (Subang) and Phuket from May 1.
The service will complement the airline's existing route between Penang and Phuket, launched in April 2007.
According to the airline's spokesperson, Ms Angelina Fernandez, Firefly is a full-fledged carrier for Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand - Growth Triangle (IMT-GT), and by the second quarter of this year, it will be introducing many more new destinations in this region.
Tourism Malaysia director - Thailand, Mr Iskandar Mirza Yusof, said Firefly's direct flights into Thailand and Indonesia "are very significant for us" as they established both Penang and Kuala Lumpur (Subang) as a gateway for IMT-GT.
"Firefly's codeshare arrangement with MAS will open the gateway for Malaysia, Sumatera and Thailand to European, Oceania, Asian, Americas and Middle Eastern markets," he said.

Malaysia seizes smuggled cobras, tortoises |
|
KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) – Malaysian authorities seized 814 tortoises and 160 king cobras as they were being smuggled out of the country on its northern border, according to a report Sunday.
Customs officials told state news agency Bernama the wildlife was found in the back of a truck in northern Perlis state as it was clearing border formalities before entering Thailand.
State customs director Mohammad Isa Endot said the reptiles were found under 2,300 kilos of garlic used to help disguise the smell of the illicit cargo.
He said the truck driver, a Thai national, was detained after failing to produce any documents for the export of the wildlife, Bernama reported.
Mohammad Isa said the tortoises and snakes had been handed over to the Wildlife and National Parks Department.
Wildlife is often smuggled out of Malaysia and into kitchens abroad.
Last month, authorities seized the butchered remains of dozens of civet cats, long-tailed monkeys and wild boar destined for sale in neighboring countries.
