AirAsia X To Increase Stansted-KL Service |
|
KUALA LUMPUR -- AirAsia X will increase the frequency of its Stansted-Kuala Lumpur (KL) flights to a daily service from July 1, less than four months after its maiden flight in March.
Its chief executive officer, Azran Osman-Rani, said the increase was due to unprecedented demand from business travellers and students.
"The British and European travellers using AirAsia X's service to KL, use the airline's route network to travel throughout South-East Asia to other destinations like Vietnam, Indonesia and Thailand," he said in a statement here today.
To mark the occasion, AirAsia X is also offering one-way fare from RM499 exclusively through online booking from Apr 21-23, 2009 for the travel period beginning July 3, 2009 to Jan 31, 2010.

Male Turtle Of Leatherback Species Facing Extinction |
|
KERTIH -- The threat of leatherback turtles becoming extinct is getting more serious with no male turtle to incubate some 200 leatherback turtle eggs buried for hatching at the Rantau Abang Turtle Sanctuary.
Terengganu Fisheries director Munir Mohd. Nawi said the leatherback turtle eggs could not hatch because they needed to be incubated by the male turtles first.
This was despite the landings by leatherback turtles at Rantau Abang, Dungun, on June 12 and 23 last year, he told reporters at a gotong-royong function at the Ma'Daerah Sanctuary Center here Saturday.
The programme, conducted with the cooperation of the BP Petronas Acetyls and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), involved the participation of 800 local residents and students.
On turtle landings recorded during the first three months of this year, Munir said there was an increase of five to 10 per cent from the corresponding period last year.
He said between 36,000 and 40,000 turtle eggs were laid in the state lat year and most of them were laid by the green turtles.
Meanwhile, head of the WWF Terengganu Turtle programme, Rahayu Zulkifli, said WWF would launch a "Don't Eat Turtle Eggs" campaign to safe the turtles from extinction.

AirAsia to fly Langkawi-Singapore route soon
SUNGAI PETANI - Direct flights between Langkawi and Singapore by AirAsia will take off soon. Transport Minister Datuk Seri Ong Tee Keat announced yesterday that the Government had given approval to the low-cost carrier to operate the route. He said the move would boost tourism and the economy in Langkawi.
“We will leave it to AirAsia to assess the situation and decide on the frequency of flights,” he told reporters after a dialogue with Chinese non-governmental organisations yesterday.
On March 7, 15 Chinese associations in Langkawi called on the Government to allow AirAsia to fly direct between the two destinations to help the resort island weather the current economic storm.
Langkawi MCA division chief Datuk Chen Liau Weng, who made the appeal to Ong, said direct flights were crucial as he claimed that the Kedah government had not been promoting tourism.

Desire For Exquisite, Unique Iron Handicraft? |
|
Written by Nabilah Salleh
|
|
| |
(In conjunction with the National Craft Day held at Kompleks Kraf, Kuala Lumpur on March 19-30)
Since time immemorial the metal iron, which is recognized for its strength and durability, has long been known to be a crucial component in the construction industry.
But for 59-year-old Embon Abdullah, iron is something unique and beautiful.
The metal even had prompted this 'iron lady' to quit her job as chief clerk with the Klang Municipal Council 14 years ago.
Now Embon is the managing director of Ebiza Sdn Bhd, a company dealing with handicraft making.
Initially Embon 'toyed' around with rattan as handicraft objects before discovering that wrought iron, easily found at construction sites, actually has commercial value if turned into attractive and decorative objects.

Stern Action Against Errant Taxi Drivers |
|
KUALA LUMPUR -- The Road Transport Department (RTD) will hand over a list of names of errant taxi drivers to the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) for stern action which entails cancellation or suspension of the taxi permits.
RTD enforcement director Salim Parlan said this was the department's new strategy as opposed to the previous practice of issuing summonses to errant taxi drivers.
He said the offences which would warrant the suspension or cancellation of permit of taxi drivers were:
* refusal to use the meter or modified the metre;
* refusal to pick up passengers or overcharging passengers;
* failure to display the taxi driver's identification card; and,
* leaving passengers in their vehicles while attending to personal matters.
