LTdL: Gavazzi Dominates Stage Two

MELAKA, Feb 10 -- Mattia Gavazzi from Diquigiovanni-Androni team dominated stage two of the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) 2009 which ended here Tuesday.

The Italian clocked 3 hours 42 minutes 13 seconds to win the route from Senawang, Negeri Sembilan to Dataran Pahlawan, Melaka, a distance of 160.9km.

Although Alexandr Pliuschin from AGR team and Cervelo Test Team's sprinter, Oscar Pujol Munoz, made a breakaway since the first sprint zone at Tampin, Negeri Sembilan, they were unable to retain the lead in the last four kilometres.

"It's already three victories this year...anyway, it was a good performance for me and the team, and the hot wheather here was no trouble at all," said Gavazzi at a press conference after the race.

Italian Mattia Gavazzi Makes It Three In A Row

MELAKA, Feb 11 (Bernama) -- Italian rider Mattia Gavazzi continued to dominate the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) when he chalked up his third consecutive stage win by clinching the 186km Melaka stage three here today.

The 25-year-old rider from Venezuela's pro continental outfit, Diquigivanni-Androni, outsprinted the others in an exciting bunch sprint to the finish in the 186km stage that started at Dataran Pahlawan and ended at Jalan Hang Tuah, Melaka.

Gavazzi placed himself in a perfect position to sprint straight to the finishing line ahead of heaving pack of 119 riders, to clock 4 hours 33 minutes 29 seconds.

With the win today, Gavazzi also retained the yellow jersey as individual classifications category and the green jersey, when he collected another 15 points, accumulating a total of 45 points.

"My conditions today was very good, plus a good back-up from the rest of the team-mates as all are working hard," said the son of legendary Italian cyclist Pierino Gavazzi.

Gavazzi said it was a great victory but they needed to stay focused for the next four stages and maintain their team strategy because the chances to win was good.

Samai wins Stage 4 of the 2009 Tour de Langkawi

At last! Someone else has won a stage at Le Tour de Langkawi 2009. After three straight wins Mattia Gavazzi has finally been bested on the line – this time by the Indonesian rider Samai (Letua Cycling Team) who has won stage 4 (221km, Melaka - Bandar Baru Bangi) in a time of 05:15:09.

Gavazzi, whose hat trick of wins had the bookies scrambling to work the odds of a fourth, was a close second however, just ahead of Nolan Hoffman (South Africa). Gavazzi felt he was lucky to be in the frame. “Today’s race is quite difficult and I had mechanical problem as my cable wire snapped and I had to swap bicycles. Apart from that I also had a puncture today,” he said.

Someone who did miss the sprint was the Australian Chris Sutton (Garmin Slipstream) who crashed within the last 3km. While he finished in last place he was credited with the same time as the winner.

28 year old Samai, whose full name is Samai Samai, rides for the Malaysian based Letua Cycling Team. He is a former stage winner of the Jelajah Malaysia cycle race.

With a refreshing lack of modesty Samai described what the win meant to him, “Today’s win proves that I’m the best rider in Asia. Even though the route today is not suitable for a sprinter as myself, I take it as a challenge for me to improve myself and also prove my worth to Le Tua,” he said.

Serpa Conquers Genting Highlands For Third Time

GENTING HIGHLANDS -- Diquigiovanni-Androni's specialist climber, Jose Serpa Perez, winner of Genting Highlands stages in 2006 and 2007, once again lived up his top billing by claiming the Le Tour de Langkawi (LTdL) fifth stage that started in Petaling Jaya and ended here Friday.

The Colombian rider clocked 2 hours 58 minutes and 56 seconds to cross the finishing line ahead of Jai Crowford who finished second, 23 seconds behind Serpa.

The defending overall team champions showed that they were in their own class when riders Jackson Rodriguez (third) and Carlos Jose Ochoa finished sixth.

"This year I'm in good condition, so I was highly confident for this stage. I was like a sleeping lion awakened after four stages," he said at a post-race press conference.

In the previous stages, Serpa showed his patience and fully supported his team-mates especially Mattia Gavazzi to win three stages and retained the yellow and green jerseys.

Team manager, Gianni Savio praised the Colombian for his contributions to the team, especially because they were able to win the stage once again with three riders at the front.

"We are now focusing to defend the overall team title in the last two stages as well as ensuring Serpa keeps the yellow jersey," he said of his Italian team which is now leading the classification with 58'51:37s.

Serpa has accumulated 19'36:19s as the leader of the general individual classification (yellow jersey), while Crawford from the Australia national team is in second place, 27 seconds behind.
