Stern Action Against Errant Taxi Drivers |

KUALA LUMPUR -- The Road Transport Department (RTD) will hand over a list of names of errant taxi drivers to the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board (CVLB) for stern action which entails cancellation or suspension of the taxi permits.
RTD enforcement director Salim Parlan said this was the department's new strategy as opposed to the previous practice of issuing summonses to errant taxi drivers.
He said the offences which would warrant the suspension or cancellation of permit of taxi drivers were:
* refusal to use the meter or modified the metre;
* refusal to pick up passengers or overcharging passengers;
* failure to display the taxi driver's identification card; and,
* leaving passengers in their vehicles while attending to personal matters.

Errant Backseat Passengers Can Be Jailed - JPJ Director-General |

SHAH ALAM -- Backseat passengers aged above 17 years found not wearing the seatbelt will be taken to court where they can be fined up to RM2,000 or sentenced to jail not exceeding one year or both.
If the passengers are below 17, it is the driver who will be punished.
However, the penalties under the Road Transport Act 1987 will only be enforced after a six-month grace period beginning Jan 1 during which, the passengers or driver can be issued with compound fines up to RM300.
Road Transport Director-General Datuk Solah Mat Hassan explained these to reporters at the Batu Tiga toll plaza here Saturday.
He said the move to take action on drivers who failed to ensure their backseat passengers below 17 wear the seatbelt was to make them aware of the rule.

Petrol, Diesel To Cost 15 Sen Less effective Nov 1st |

PUTRAJAYA, Oct 31 -- The retail prices of petrol and diesel will be reduced by 15 sen a litre respectively effective Saturday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi announced.
With this, RON97 petrol will be reduced from RM2.30 a litre to RM2.15 a litre, RON92 petrol from RM2.20 a litre to RM2.05 a litre and diesel from RM2.20 a litre to RM2.05 a litre.
"As world oil prices dropped significantly lately, the government took a decision reduce the prices of petrol and diesel further for the benefit of the people," Abdullah said in a media statement released here Friday.

Time For Some Dignity In Malaysia's Public Transport |

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 22 (Bernama) - Over the years, complaints on the shoddy services offered in the countrys public transport sector have continued to snowball and reached colossal proportions.
This had forced Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to take to the ground to witness and experience for himself the daily mayhem and disorder faced by commuters in the city.
At the end of the Prime Ministers day trip, he arrived at the conclusion that a more efficient, reliable and integrated public transportation, which provides seamless travel and greater frequency of services, is required.
In the Klang Valley alone, an average of 400,000 people use the bus services daily while another 350,000 go up RapidKLs trains. Overall, RapidKL provides 44 per cent of the public transport services in the Klang Valley.
These were some of the statistics in the 2009 Budget speech, delivered by Abdullah in the Dewan Rakyat last Aug 29.
To further improve public transport's efficiency, the government has pledged a sum of RM35 billion to be utilised for the period 2009-2014.
Improvement plans include enhancing the capacity of existing rail services, building new tracks and increasing the number of buses.
Regular public transport users including those in the Klang Valley now harbour high hopes that the endless woes they are facing daily would be things of the past.

 KUALA LUMPUR (AFP) — The ads promoting "Malaysia: Truly Asia" aim to welcome visitors with a warm smile to a prosperous and modern nation, so the taxi fleet branded "the worst in the world" can come as a bit of a shock.
Even the locals are not spared the shabby service of unkempt and hostile drivers behind the wheels of decrepit vehicles who refuse to use the meter, overcharge and pick-and-choose which destinations they will travel to.
At the popular KLCC mall under Kuala Lumpur's iconic Petronas Twin Towers is a typical scene, as a gang of cabbies negotiate with a young Norwegian couple just metres from a signboard warning against "taxi touts".

Passengers Should Provide Exact Change For Bus Fares |

PETALING JAYA Sept 2 () -- Rangkaian Pengangkutan Integrasi Deras Sdn Bhd (RapidKL) Tuesday announced that it would strictly enforce the policy of paying the exact change for bus fares.
General manager for communications Ebi Azly Abdullah said although notices were put up on all buses on the ruling for quite some time, some passengers still had the tendency to give RM10 notes for a trip that cost only RM1.
"Our drivers are not equipped with cash to give them change. When this happens, they scold the driver and the situation becomes unpleasant," he said in a statement here.
In addition, it was imperative that passengers had small change before boarding the buses, said Ebi Azly, adding that if passengers provided more than what was required, they would not be given return change.
The bus fare structure is as follows: Tempatan buses T222 (RM1), Utama buses U22 (RM2) and Bandar buses B111 (RM2).

No Additional Bus Service, School Bus Operators Unwilling To Lease Buses |

KUALA LUMPURÂ -- No additional bus service is expected to meet the balik-kampung rush for this year's festive holidays following refusal by school bus and factory bus operators nationwide to lease their buses for the purpose.
Pan Malaysia Bus Operator Association president Datuk Mohamed Ashfar Ali said that based on quotations submitted by its members, many of the school bus and factory bus operators were not keen to lease their buses.
"We too can't offer a higher lease quotation, because we don't make much profit either and the government won't let us raise the fare," he said when contacted by Bernama Tuesday.

Cheating Cab Drivers A Bane For Commuters |

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 -- Stern action must be taken against taxi drivers who cheat passengers by tampering with the meters as they are a bane for commuters grappling with the rising cost of living.
Cheating by a handful of taxi drivers had tarnished the image of the Malaysian taxi service and raised concerns about the quality of the meters and enforcement by authorities.
Passenger Muliadi Othman, 35, who use the taxi to commute to work daily due to poor public transport said he normally pay RM5 but sometimes felt cheated when asked to pay RM11 based on the meter reading.
"My suspicion was aroused as the driver had applied the brakes regularly causing the meter to jump," he told Bernama recently.
He said several taxi drivers admitted some of them had resorted to tampering with the meters to make it move fast to cheat passengers.
Salina Yusof, 29, said she felt cheated when using taxis as she always ended up paying double the normal fare while some drivers refused to use meters citing traffic congestion.
